Book of Wyrms – Occult New Age
Desert Records release: 7th May 2021
“‘Occult New Age’ is Book of Wyrms at their fastest, slowest, loudest, and weirdest.” says the band who have been recording for the first time as a four-piece. This gave the band space to stretch out a little bit and fill the spectrum with big textures and proggy riffs. Formed in 2014, Book of Wyrms came together to forage strange ingredients for their sonic pot, and their retro-futurist synths has people always ask if it’s a theremin.
And yes, psychedelic sound is the focus here: 1960s fuzz guitar feeling combined with appealing female vocals that seem fragile and powerful at the same time. After a beautiful acoustic guitar song (title track) and after “Hollergoblin” respectively, it shifts into the direction of jazz impro rather than fuzz rock – and therefore a bit out of my sphere. “Dracula” has a bit of a Fields of the Nephilim feel to it. The album is quite suitable for chilling on warm summer evenings, but not quite my cup of tea.
Book Of Wyrms are:
Chris DeHaven – Drums and Percussion
Sarah Moore Lindsey – Vocals/ Synthesizer
