Cradle of Filth – Cryptoriana – The Seductivness Of Decay
Label: Nuclear Blast Playing Time: 53 Min Release: 22.09.2017
In their 26th year of existence Cradle of Filth are releasing their 12th studio album. A tremendous ratio especially if you have in mind that they have rarely copied themselves and have never created songs by the numbers.
Honestly, in the past 10 years I have lost sight of Dani Filth and his sidekicks a little bit. Therefore I am really surprised by the style of those songs. While tracks on albums like “Nymphetamine” and “Thornography” were dominated by bombastic orchestral passages, you will not find them on this album. Instead of bombast, songs like ‘Wester Vespertine’ and ‘You Will Know The Lion By His Claw’ give you a real punch in your stomach. But due to the complex arrangements, Cradle did not lose any of the soundtrack vibe this band is famous for.
But “Cryptoriana” has also two disadvantages. First of all, the songs do not get straight to the point. More of somewhat compact arrangements would have been nice. The second point is that most choruses are not powerful enough. It requires a couple of listening cycles that they are revealed because they are not clearly differentiated. The only exception is ‘Heartbreak And Seance’.
