Infirmum – Walls of Sorrow

Label: WormHoleDeath Records release: 18.12.2020

Infirmum is a doom metal project, founded in early 2019 by the Finnish artist Timo Solonen. Before that, Timo had already composed some songs and released an EP under the name Kuolonkoura. Thanks to positive reviews, Timo decided to record a full album with professional musicians. I was rather surprised to read that it was a solo project and not a “real” band. However, Infirmum is now evolving into this with Anna Rose as vocalist and Timo behind the growls and guitars.

Walls of Sorrow offers catchy tunes – Doom / Melodic Death Metal with a touch of Pagan Metal, carried by growl vocals. After the fantastic opener To Darkness, the song material focuses on viscous lava sounds. However, Autumn Breeze, for example, surprises with blast beats and there are also Finnish lyrics (Trust). Songs like Doomed or Fearless remind me a bit of Swallow The Sun, Sail Away of Insomnium. Great melodic arcs and hypnotic catchy choruses, so I can recommend this album not only doomsters. I would have appreciated more of the opener’s groove in between, then my rating would have been even higher…
