Stratovarius – Enigma (Intermission 2)

Label: earMusic  Playing Time: 76 Min  Release: 28th September 2018

Seventeen years ago the Finnish Metal export no 1 released their first rarities collection called “Intermission”. It contained a lot of bonus tracks and other rare stuff. Although the featured songs were numerous, it was only an album for die-hard fans due to the average quality of the material.

Enigma-Intermission 2” has a similar concept. The basics are a couple of bonus tracks, rare bonus tracks and never-before-on-CD-released bonus tracks. To be quite honest, most of them are only interesting for the die -hard fanbase because their quality is again mostly average. Only the ballade ‘Old Man And The Sea’ is a real convincing one. But there are also tracks that are more interesting. Those are three new songs and four Stratovarius classics that have been turned into orchestrated versions. The guys have chosen a procedure Doro had done already on her “Classic Diamonds” release: They used acoustic guitars instead of electric gear. This gives much more room to the fantastic voice of Timo Kotipelto than he normally has on the typical Stratovarius songs. The guys should try to use this more often in future! It would really improve the sometimes overloaded Stratovarius stuff.
