Supergirl

Although this is SPOILER-FREE, I can’t resist making one comment right at the start: this Supergirl has much more of Tank Girl than of the lovable Kara (Melissa Benoist) from the TV series. That said, it fits in well with the film’s anarchic, sarcastic tone. Without revealing too much of the plot: This movie tells the story of Kara Zor-El and her dark past, before she finally lands on Earth. Unlike her cousin SUPERMAN she isn’t particularly interested in heroism, however, and prefers to go on an extended pub crawl through the galaxy with her dog Krypto – until she finally meets the brave Ruthye and the villain Krem …
Milly Alcock (eg House of Dragons) is exceptionally well-suited to play such a rebellious character, and with all those wacky aliens, planets and situations – I found myself thoroughly entertained. But of course, having a – literally – strong woman as the protagonist, or rather several strong female central characters, naturally that invites massive attacks from ‘fans’ even before anyone has seen more than the trailer… and as always, these ‘critics’ are way off the mark. There’s action, there’s depth, there’s fun with Jason Momoa unleashed – all beautifully balanced so that it’s neither too shallow nor too over-the-top. And anyone who takes issue with the classic ‘revenge’ plot should also make a point of avoiding films such as The Mandalorian & Grogu or, for example, Tarantino classics like Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained – or indeed almost any Western or Samurai film …
Yes, there are one or two scenes that I find a bit poorly edited or conceived, but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the film itself – I’d absolutely recommend it for a proper viewing on the (really) big screen. I’m already looking forward to a sequel featuring all three Kryptonians, the two-legged ones and, in particular, this adorable four-legged one!
