Ghosts Of Atlantis – 3.6.2.4
Black Lion Records release: 26 March 2021
Wow, that’s what I call a massive debut! Hailing from deepest, darkest Suffolk, Ghosts Of Atlantis carries a wealth of experience and professionalism, featuring present and past members of Devilment, Failed Humanity, The Conflict Within, and Cold Lazarus. The band members involved have been part of labels like Nuclear Blast and Candlelight Records and endorsed by Caparison Guitars, Kemper Amps, Bare Knuckle Pickups, and Seymour Duncan. All the members have been in various bands for the last 09 years and appeared on fests such as Wacken Open Air, Summer Breeze, Grasspop, Bloodstock, and Hammerfest. Yes, you can hear that.
On the debut album 3.6.2.4, GOA builds the lore around the mythology of ancient Greece and the lost city of Atlantis. Pure ear candy, the band defines it as Symphonic/Progressive Blackened Death Metal. I’d rather go for Symphonic/Melodic Death Metal – alternating clean & growl vocals, massive riffs and symphonic sounds, catchy tunes, blast beats and groove. Yes, a song like When Tridents Fail is pretty much Black Metal … in between a few Acoustic-Folk/Ethno/World Music sprinkles (e.g. Gardens of Athena) – and do I hear a Clawfinger tribute embedded in Halls Of Lemurai? Therefore, if you like Bloodred Hourglass, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity or the old In Flames, you can simply go for it. The band, by the way, rather refers to Fleshgod Apocalypse, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Carach Angren, Devilment – well, yes, I can understand that too.
My only criticism – I’m not sure whether Ghosts Of Atlantis have found their trademark sound yet. Still, a fantastic debut. Buy it.
