DayGlo Mourning – Dead Star
Black Doomba Records release: 12 February 2021
DayGlo Mourning out of Atlanta sound on their second album just like their band name – a lot of evil Sludge Doom-laden riffs, a touch of melancholy plus some psychedelic vibrant colors that adorn the packaging. The title track and opener is indeed a memorable piece of all those elements, heavy as hell. Ray Miner crashes and pounds out a fierce rhythm on “Dead Star”. Bassist Jerimy McNeil, meanwhile, leads the charge on “The Offering” and “Faithful Demise” which pays homage to Black Sabbath. When displaying the Blues roots on Bloodghast, the beer-soaked yet melodic vocals of Joe Mills shine particularly brightly. For my taste, however, it’s a bit too plain and psychedelic after this great opening, only the catchy Ashwhore – a great Sludge Doom beast emanating from a toxic swamp – and the final Witches’ Ladder have again my full approval. Summing up – a nice piece of Doom and a must-have record for genre fans, although not all tracks are my cup of tea.
