Abhorrence – Megalohydrothalassophobic

Abhorrence are legends in the Death Metal scene as they had been hugely influencial. Fans of this Finnish act might had hoped for this to happen sooner – now after 28 years the band releases 23 minutes of brand new material on their EP  Megalohydrothalassophobic. Inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft and Timothy Morton’s philosophy the lyrics deal with the horror vision of an ecological disaster.  

I had a chance to hear 2 new songs when performed

live on stage – and this EP confirms my impression that the band surrounding Amorphis-guitarist Tomi Koivusaari (Kalle Mattsson – guitar, Jukka Kolehmainen – vocals, Jussi “Juice” Ahlroth – bass and drummer Waltteri Väyrynen) has undergone quite a bit of musical development.

Don’t worry, Old School Death Metal is still the dominating genre – but in a much more refined, grooving and complex version that still sounds catchy. You can spot influences from the Doom- as well as the Progressive scene, and occasionally there seems to be an Amorphis echo… The only thing I find indigestible on this EP is its title…  Highly recommended.
