Mors Principium Est – Embers of a Dying World

AFM Records    Feb 10, 2017

Those Finns have made some impact since 2003, yet repeated line-up changes seem to have been the biggest obstacle for a more stable career. Thanks to a permanent addition from the UK – guitarist Andy Gillion – some calmer times in this aspect seem to have arrived …
The 6th Mors Principium Est album begins with some bombastic ”Nightwish meets Apocalyptica” intro, yet afterwards it turns into a Melodic Death battle scenario. Do not expect clean singing, those rough vocals or growls do fit much better to those angry, aggressive riffs and beats. In order to give you a better description, the sound could be compared with Children Of Bodom, but MPE are more epic, ”symphonic”, and occasionally you can even hear electronic elements. Thus it is easy to claim that MPE have develop their own sound. Headbangers will find some nice groove (Into The Dark, The Ghost), and you cannot help thinking of Nightwish again when the beautiful voice of Christina Marie comes in to embellish the power-ballad-like track Death Is The Beginning.
All in all a solid and recommendable album, and for all those falling for high quality Heavy Metals from the North, it is a Must-Have anyway. So let’s see whether MPE can also make it on the international market.

STALKER colleague Timo is impressed, too:

Although Mors Principium Est was founded in 1999 and the band now releases the 6th studio album, they are still quite unknown in many countries. What could be the reason? Maybe it is due to the small amount of live shows (at least out of Finland)? Or maybe it is due to several line-up changes, which have regularly taken place since 2007?

Whatever the reason, “Embers of a Dying World” could change it all! It contains fast melodic Death Metal with a powerful, almost brutal, but also clear sound. It contains some really well-done songs, especially ‘Into the Dark’, ‘The Drowning’ and ‘The Ghost’. Their benefit is the great guitar work. Both lead and rhythm guitars are played fast, but also with a lot of feeling. Moreover, the sometimes bombastic, sometimes atmospheric keys have a lot of impact on the overall sound, but never sound exaggerated.
Although “Embers of a Dying World” has some obsolete moments, it has turned out a good album. Fans of Children of Bodom, In Flames and Amon Amarth should check it out!
