Purified Black – Elvis Didn´t Do No Drugs

Label: Motor / H´art    Published: 04.11.2016

PURIFIED BLACK is, according to Promotext, somewhere between Iron Maiden and Otis Redding, Muddy Waters and Muse, Rage Against The Machine and Jeff Buckley. I do not want to contradict it at all, however, instrumentation and the enthusiasm for the experiment reminds me a lot of Queen, even if the singing of Frontman Tico is less eccentric but as convincing as Freddie (Mercury’s).
The debut album “Elvis Didn’t Do No Drugs” is musically quite diverse. Again and again, ruthless drumming pushes to the foreground, while the guitars play support, sometimes heavy, sometimes melodiously.
The most exciting thing are the changes, those changes of style as well as within the songs: many tempo changes, many surprising phrases, never boring. The band is telling stories.
This is the great strength of PURIFIED BLACK, no track is like the other, hard changes with soft, tender with brutal, the axe with the feather and finally the white water, which has jumped fast and slow through whirlpools of sound, flows into an ocean of harmony .
It is difficult to highlight songs here, but my favorites are the complex “Step Inside”, where keyboard sequences recall memories of Jon Lord, and the fast heavy track “Copy & Paste”.
“Elvis Didn’t Do No Drugs” is a surprisingly varied album, but at the same time exhaustive in its complexity. I suggest that Hardcore and Deathmetal purists keep their fingers off, everyone else should listen to it in any case, there could be something great on the rise.
