The Hypothesis – Origin

Label: Inverse Records     release May 2016

This band from Kouvola, Finland, has not re-invented Modern Melodic Death Metal, but definitely nows how to work with the genre elements and a couple of others (e.g. Prog) and to deliver an impressive debut album in their 7th year. Clearly not a beginners’ act, as the members have gained experience with other bands, e.g. Naildown, Paradise Lost, Dimebag Beyond Forever, Dead Shape Figure, Codeon etc, and they have shared the stage with many big names in the scene.
Therefore the (high) quality of the end product does not come as a surprise: quite heavy straight-in-your-face sound, aggressive and still appealing despite those evil growls, great guitar work and the keyboard does not ”take over” at all, there’s a lot of variety and sophistication – or let’s put it that way, all those who like the early In Flames, Children of Bodom and other colleagues from the same department will enjoy this release.
Check out: End of Your Days – ear candy; Atonement and Weak Story have clean vocals added – which could have happened more often – and the complex-playful-thrashy Eye for an Eye (video below). Only the instrumental Second Chance is not quite my cup of tea. Otherwise: Well done!
