W.A.S.P. – Golgotha

Playing Time: 64 min  Release Date: 2nd October 2015

Six years passed since WASP released their last studio album “Babylon”. In just a few days, album no 15, titled “Golgotha”, will see the light of day.  Many people who had the opportunity to listen to the album in advance were full of praise. After listening to the album many times during the last two weeks, I can’t quite comprehend that enthusiasm.

Surely, “Golgotha” has its moments: “Scream” is a relatively simple but effective opener, enriched with a nice chorus and a cool riff. “Slaves Of A New World Order” and “Eyes Of My Maker”, in contrast, are more complex songs, almost epic, with a nice dynamic and dramatic arrangement. Similarly epic is the final title track – in my opinion, though, its instrumental parts are much too long. The other half of the tracks is just plain average: They do not hurt but they are not a reason to buy this album either.

So all in all, “Golgotha” is an average album. Interestingly, you cannot even call it Heavy Metal because the pace, the riffs and the drums remind too much of Classic (Hard) Rock. But I also want to mention that the sound is great. There’s a lot of pressure but it’s not exaggerated, instead it’s always dynamic and organic, almost timeless.
