D-A-D & The Hot Damn! @ Z7 Pratteln

27.11.2024 @ Konzertfabrik Z7 Pratteln, Switzerland

An evening with cult band D-A-D at Z7 is on tonight, as the gentlemen are celebrating their 40th anniversary. Are they already that old? The band has actually been active since 1982. It’s clear from the start that we’re in for an entertaining evening, because you always get that special something with D-A-D, but we actually didn’t expect the support act to be so brilliant.

The evening begins with The Hot Damn! from England. The British band led by singer and guitarist Gill Montgomery hit the stage at full speed with their unicorn. With their mix of rock, pop and country, the four ladies not only inspire the audience visually. Musically, the girls are top-notch and Gill’s vocals fit the music 100%. There is a large inflatable unicorn on stage, which suddenly falls on bassist Lzi Hayes during the show. She takes it easy and just puts the huge beast again on its feet. The ladies are not only beautifully dressed, but have also come up with a great idea to boost merch sales. There’s a little vocal interlude and a country-style song by Gill, who sings about how you should buy your loved ones a shirt/CD/cap, you don’t need that shit but you can show them a bit of love. I think such a charming performance made some people buy a shirt or a record from the ladies after all. If you want good rock music from powerful females, then you are in good hands with The Hot Damn! – you should definitely listen to them.

After a short changeover, it’s D-A-D‘s turn. The Danes, consisting of the brothers Jesper and Jacob Binzer, Stig Pedersen and Laust Sonne, give it all from the very first minute. Bassist Stig Pedersen’s bizarre instrument creations are particularly eye-catching. Sometimes a large cross with a double-decker, sometimes oversized, transparent with a light effect, a rocket, a car or an upside-down guitar, there are all sorts of things to marvel at. Musically, the guys focus on the old hits, plus a few songs from the latest album, for example “The Ghost”. Jesper Binzer tries to crack jokes in German the whole evening and he’s great at comedy, but he also uses the same jokes at every gig. The order of when and what he says was identical to the last time they played at Z7 – might get boring in the long run. We also heard “Laust we love you” last time. Maybe something should be changed after 40 years. You can take it with a sense of humor and just enjoy the show. Musically and in terms of performance, the concert was a hit. The pretty large audience for a Wednesday evening doesn’t hold back in celebrating this band and I would say that with around 800 spectators a lot more are present than at their previous show here. This band has been in show business for so long and deservedly so, it’s simply a pleasure to hear and see them live every time. Let’s hope that we can still see the 50th, 60th and 70th anniversary with those guys!
