Witch Hunt – Rock n ‘Roll Possession
Dead Center Productions June 2021
WITCH HUNT is a Speed Metal band formed in Bogotá – Colombia with the firm purpose of interpreting sounds forged by the great Rock n ‘Roll bands of all time, but with a strong influence from the Metal of the wonderful decade of the 80′ s. The band names Onslaught, Venom, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Steeler (DE) and Mercyful Fate as their influences and this illustrates nicely what you can expect here.
The album features virtuoso guitar work, solid drumming and a fair amount of aggression. Witch Hunt mixes speed attacks with slower grooving parts quite skillfully. The vocals are much more spoken than sung, Thrash metal style with an occasional King Diamond high-pitch tribute. Something you need get used to, but it’s definitely original and a trademark. The focus is anyway much more on the instrumentals. Spanish is the language used for most of the lyrics, but there’s some stuff in English too. All in all the song material inspires headbanging and moshing and allows excellent instrumentalists to shine. This also applies to the soft and slightly prog-experimental „Iron Pact“ and the acoustic-atmospheric-spooky final “The beginning and the end”.
After a few songs Luis’ idiosyncratic style even contributes to the catchy quality, see for example the band anthem Witch Hunt. Therefor elend them an ear or two.
