Aria have been a very positive surprise for me a couple of years ago – in their Russian home country they are superstars, in the Western part of Europe and further West they are still not as popular as they probably should be. This might change with their latest release, the 13th (!) named ‘Curse Of The Seas’. Because I have to say that using the standard of Western Metal icons, Aria should be named along Iron Maiden oder Judas Priest, as well as Blind Guardian, Accept / U.D.O., Rage or Running Wild. The latter might come to mind because of this Pirate theme thing… Curse Of The Seas (in Russian “Проклятье морей”) has everything a Metal heart / Headbanger loves – kick-ass songs, cool riffs, catchy melodies and an exceptionally skilled singer… Remarkably, the mixing of the album was made by the famous American producer and guitarist Roy Z, who has worked with Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Judas Priest, Sepultura, Sebastian Bach and many other artists. Mastering was done by Maor Appelbaum (Yngwie Malmsteen, Lita Ford, Faith No More, Rob Halford, Yes). It might be the Russian language that needs some adjusting to when listening to the material, or those Cyrillic letters that makes finding the band on the internet a bit more challenging. But hey, this should not be an obstacle any longer since Google and the like. Listen to the stuff, watch the video below, buy the album!
