Dimmu Borgir – Eonian
Label: Nuclear Blast Playing Time: 55 Min Release: 04th May 2018
The last studio album of Dimmu Borgir had been released seven years ago, therefore it took indeed a while until they wrapped up their 9th studio album. But who cares about seven years if you have to swallow and digest such an opulent opus like “Abrahadabra”, especially because “time is an illusion” (quote by Silenoz).
After the first cycle it becomes already obvious that also “Eonian” has to be swallowed and digest. Past albums of Dimmu Borgir had already featured a high standard, multiple layers and complexity, but this one is, again, over the top! Especially the bombastic tracks are even more bombastic and opulent than ever before. Just listen to the opening triple! It is the nasty ‘The Unveiling’, the catchy and bombastic ‘Interdimensional Summit’ and ‘Ætheric‘, that thrills with it majestic “Rise and Fall”-Part – those justify the purchase of this album alone.
But also the other six songs and the outro have their qualities and set their own accents. Sometimes it is more bombastic (‘Alpha Aeon Omega’) and sometimes more basic Black Metal (‘Lightbringer’). Let’s mention also ‘Coucil of Wolves and Snakes’ that thrills with great folk elements.
Short and sweet, I have to admit that “Eonian” has turned out a real masterpiece! It does not contain a single weak song and it offers enough diversity and also details to keep us busy trying to understand it for the next couple of years. I sincerely hope that it will not be seven years of waiting again…
