Subliminal Fear – Escape from Leviathan

Label: Inverse Records Release Date: May 13th 2016
The Italians Subliminal Fear have been working for more than 2 years on this – their third – album, and they also changed their musical direction – from Swedish-style Melodic Death to ”Cyber Metal”, and also the lyrical theme deals with apocalyptic vision of the world and the society, inspired by movies like Terminator, Alien and Matrix.
And well, I can tell you right away that they have not quite ditched the Swedish influences, which is not a bad thing. My first impression – the sound reminded me a bit of Amorphis at their Tuonela times, but then it turned more towards In Flames meets Machine Supremacy; the title track let me think of Dimmu Borgir for some reason.
There’s plenty of catchy hooks and ear candy melodies to which clean vocals and growls are added – and some of those feature the international guest vocalists Guillaume Bideau (Mnemic, One-Way Mirror), Jon Howard (Threat Signal, Arkaea) and Lawrence Mackrory (Darkane). The sound is d by Synth / Keyboards, driven by nice djent guitar riffing – which could occasionally been set to the foreground, in my opinion. And sometimes it sounds a bit too much like Pop to me – as if the band has not quite found their particular trademark yet. Obviously they are on the best way with this remarkable Cyber Metal Album.
