Van Arx: Van Arx

Release: 29.04.2016 Label: Non Stop Music

Van Arx formed already back in the 1980s, but in the early 1990s, they split up again. The band’s new self-titled album is thus their comeback. The Swiss band’s hearts clearly beat for 80s Hard Rock, especially the glamrock subgenre. It’s easy to hear their influences on the album: Kiss, Mötley Crüe etc are very important for the band. You can also see this when looking at their outfits. With wigs, make-up and plateau boots they live their drag queen fantasies. Unfortunately, I have to say that with newer bands, trying to revive the 80 glam rock style, the costumes always look absurd and ridiculous. Yes, also Kiss and Twisted Sister “dressed up” but it never looked ridiculous or as if they would like to make fun of the genre.

Anyway, the 12 songs on “Van Arx” feature three different lead vocalists, depending on the song. One sings with more, the other with less talent but at least the voices fit to the particular songs. With the exception of drummer Sticky Martin, everyone in the band takes over vocal duties, which is a good idea because it contributes to the songs’ versatility. Although the songs often remind you of hits by aforementioned artists, they are easy on the ear. Sometimes, I wish the guitar solos would have been more powerful, I’m sure the guys know how to do it. Thus, some songs are good, others are a bit lame. Personally, I would have loved to hear a more energetic opener than “Make my Day”. That’s because, this very first song often decides whether one keeps listening to the record or stops right there and then. For a Swiss band, they did a great job, though. Give them a chance and take a listen! It’s worth it, especially “Stay tonight”.
