Godwatt – L’ultimo Sole

Label: Jolly Roger Records; Release: 29/02/2016

Hailing from Italy, 3 piece GODWATT are into their tenth year as a band, having changed their name and vocal language in that time. Described as stoner/doom by some and Heavy Superrock on their facebook page, they open with an inspirational Alice in Chains-esque vocal harmony and full-on guitar riffs for what could be a classic track further down the road.

There are moments on this album when they slip between genres with ease, but there are others, like the ending of Memoria (or what I thought was ending) being epic, but then the music continues for another minute, taking away from what could have been…if only!

Overall it has to be said that the two re-recorded songs (bonus tracks) are the two best tracks, but they are much more rock-driven that the new material. The album has its moments, but the lack of fluidity and extended endings make this a challenging listen in places.

Standout track – Cenere. Breaking from the stoner/doom norms, this track has subtle guitars and gentle vocals (not actual lyrics), a total surprise but a very welcome moment.
