Vorna – Ei valo minua seuraa
Label: Inverse Records already released
I think I had mentioned before that I am not quite a Black Metal fan or expert, therefore do not really go for releases in this genre. Yet when some Pagan Metal comes to the mix, I might feel interested, and in this case it was worth to risk an ear. The Finns Vorna even put a lot of Melancholic Metal a la Insomnium / Swallow The Sun on their second album ”Ei valo minua seuraa” (”No Light Follows Me”). Maybe the fact that it was mixed by Tuomas Kokko (e.g. Swallow the Sun, Ghost Brigade) and mastered by Jaakko Viitalähde (e.g. Ghost Brigade, Black Crucifixion, Alghazanth) has something to do with it. First I would rather describe it as ”Dimmu Borgir minus clean vocals”, but then Itsetön develops into an epic melodic beautiful and melancholic track. Vaipunut likewise sticks out with nature sounds, flute and clean vocals – absolutely appealing, just like Yksin – a heart melting ballad with acoustic guitar, string-sounds and growl vocals that add such intensity, especially when again the Metal riffing is set off. Somehow I have to think of Dornenreich, although Vorna has a different style. Songs like these make Vorna quite distinguishable amidst those countless epic-atmospheric Pagan/Black Metal releases. Check them out.
