The 69 Eyes – Death Of Darkness

Label: Atomic Fire Records release date: April 21st, 2023

This is what the fans of those Finnish Gothic rock ghouls have been waiting for – Their ominous thirteenth album “Death Of Darkness” is now available.

Unfortunately it’s the opener and title track, of all options, which I find underwhelming, despite the nice addition of evil screeches in the chorus. However, what comes next is fully convincing, eg „Drive“ (the single released in April 2022), „California“, „Sundown“, „Dying in the Night“ or perhaps the most impressive track on the album, the duet with Kat von D: „This Murder Takes 2“. The album provides a collection of fantastic Gothic ear candy, from their well known Goth’n’Roll style to Rockabilly or to „Gotta Rock“, their take on the classic tune by Finnish rock heroes BOYCOTT.

And yes, even after 34 years (!!) in the biz, those now slightly more mature “Lost Boys” still kick ass and sound fresh and hungry – just listen to “Call me Snake”, for example, those evil snarls of Jyrki69 – WOW! Therefore it’s high time to get out your sunglasses, leather jackets and black eyeliners and surrender to the darkness, especially when the Helsinki Vampires come to haunt your town on a tour.
