Amorphis – Halo

Label: Atomic Fire – release: February 11, 2022

When it says “Amorphis” on the package, you can rely on receiving a quality product, i.e. epic, catchy melodies with a Folk twist, combined with aggressive riffs, clean vocals as well as death growls, and every song with the potential to become an immortal metal classic. For more than 30 years, the Finnish Kalevala metal pioneers have successfully carved out their very own niche. So it was no big surprise that this record landed in top position of the domestic charts shortly after its release.

So there’s basically no need for a lengthy review, it’s just a question whether Halo can keep up with the absolutely sensational predecessor “Queen of Time”. During the first play-through, I noticed the somewhat more progressive character, in comparison, and I couldn’t immediately pin down an instant smash hit. It’s also difficult with all this ear candy… How Halo will position itself on the band’s lush evergreen scale – and thus on a future live album setlist – must ultimately be decided by the fan community. In any case highly recommended.
