Raised By Wolves
HBO Nordic, Season 1, 10 Episodes, released Nov 2020, P-15+ Germany, Singapore, UK:18 (self-applied)
The story: After Earth is torn apart by religious differences and the human race teeters on the edge of extinction, an atheistic android architect sends two creations – Mother and Father – to start a peaceful, godless colony on the planet Kepler-22b. Raising human children in this mysterious virgin land is a treacherous and difficult task which is jeopardized by the arrival of the Mithraic, a deeply devout religious order of surviving humans.
As I am too afraid to accidentally include spoilers, I decided to write about it after watching 1 episode only. The praise in other media, 8 award nominations – all this is absolutely justified. And it made me check out this one, plus noticing that Ridley Scott is involved. You might think that it’s all about several well-known SF formulas and standards: apocalyptic war, human kind going extinct, androids, alien planet colony etc. And we have seen Metropolis-inspired SF iconography before, too. However, the mind-boggling handling of all these standards, the twists and turns, the heart-wrenching thrilling emotional rollercoaster you are experiencing just in ONE episode – plus stunning visuals, plus beloved “Ragnar” Travis Fimmel as Marcus (still looking like a Viking 😉 ) – what to say, I am definitely hooked. Time to binge-watch…
