THE RASMUS – Dark Matters
Playground Music release date: Oct 6, 2017
The Rasmus are back! After a long absence from the music scene, they have released a new single „Paradise“ at the end of March and in summer another one „Silver Night“ (see below), and yesterday their new long player became available. „Dark Matters“ should reveal that those – more mature – boys from Finland still got a feeling for ear candy and songs that have potential for airplay as well as a dance floor (Crystalline). Some moderate modern effects on voice or in the rhythm section do not feel being misplaced (Empire, Black Days), the songs provide catchy tunes and choruses without feeling like Kitsch. And there’s some real heavy guitar in Wonderman (see Videoclip below).
I have the impression that the „adult“ Rasmus offer much more of melancholy, sort of a „Dark Matter“ suggested in the album title. Singer Lauri Ylönen mentioned in an interview with a Finnish paper that those songs can be seen as sort of a diary, offering a rollercoaster ride of emotions and adding a good dose of sadness. He and his band mates Pauli Rantasalmi – Gitarre, Eero Heinonen – Bass, Aki to have the Swedish team ‚The Family‘ (e.g. Fifth Harmony, Iggy Azalea, Måns Zelmerlöw) record and mix the album.
A well-done comeback with a range of potential hits, therefore I assume that this album will satisfy the – now also a bit more mature – The Rasmus fans, and can win some new ones. Whether the band can repeat their past success in the past – #1 chart position in Finland, Germany and Austria with the ‚Dead Letters‘ album in 2003 and 1,5 Mio sold, 8 albums between 1996 and 2012 released in more than 50 countries and 2,3 Mio items sold – is to be seen. First they go on a world tour, playing European venues in November and December – check the TOUR DATES.
