Crystal Ball: Déjà-Voodoo
Release: 02.09.2016 Label: Massacre Records
It has only been a year since Crystal Ball released their last album, LifeRider. Now, the Swiss are already back with a new album, titled “Déjà Voodoo”. With the predecessor, the band played many gigs throughout the last months but still they found time to record another album. It’s their ninth already and the third one featuring singer Steven Mageney. Apart from the bassist, there were no changes with the line-up; the band also managed to get over the unfortunate departure of Markus Flury and secured themselves a worthy substitute: Tony Castell, who used to pluck the strings with Krokus.
The new albums offers some very good pieces – the band tried to rejuvenate their sound a little bit, which worked nicely here and there. What I don’t like so much are the partly electronically distorted vocals – and I’m pretty sure this effect is not because of my stereo. Musically, Crystal Ball are top, again, – there’s everything you could wish for: cool guitar sounds, bass lines and hard drums. It’s simply well-done Hard Rock. I only miss some diversity with the vocal arrangements.
„Déjà-Voodoo“ is a very good album, without big surprises but solid. From experience I can say, however, that live it will sound twice as good as on record.
