It’s dark, wet, the train stops halfway and everyone is laughing. Sounds scary, and yes, it indeed was – fitting for Halloween somehow. We all headed in the same direction before going our separate ways, with me turning towards Cassiopeia and the rest opting for one of the various Halloween parties – not knowing that they were really missing out.

In the basement of Cassiopeia, a diverse crowd gathered—all ages, Halloween refusers (like me) mingling with those showing up in costumes. In the end, we were all there for one reason: we wanted to experience a great evening of music, singing and dancing together, and ultimately working up a sweat.

When the Berlin based band PIGEONS took to the small stage on time as the opening act, the room was still relatively empty, and as is always the case, no one really dared to stand in the front row, and there was an invisible circular line behind which everyone gathered to listen to this girl band. Everyone on stage was clearly having fun, and musically there was certainly something for everyone.

It was exciting to learn that the band hasn’t been around for very long—and that they didn’t grow up with much musical training, but started the band based on the idea that “you’re never too old to start something new/try something new.” I’m curious to see where the band’s journey will take them in the future, when they gain more confidence on stage and with their instruments, and thus can create more momentum.

The short break was used by many to refuel (aka replenish their beer supplies), and it became noticeably and visibly more crowded, with everyone taking a step or two closer to the stage, and suddenly there was so much more of a concert atmosphere than before. The anticipation grew by the minute as everything was being prepared at full speed on stage. And then…3…2…1…let’s go! 90 minutes full steam ahead with MARATHONMANNconquering the stage in Halloween costumes.

To be honest, it took me a second to realize: costumes! Perfect for Halloween! For me, as someone who isn’t into Halloween, it was something I had to swallow—but then again, what do I expect when I go to a concert on this day? During the concert, the costumes also became something of an obstacle—how much do you sweat behind a mask with fabric covering your entire head? Or in a polyester onesie with a skeleton design? Apparently a lot – but don’t worry, the audience was sweating profusely too, and with every second in the small mosh pit and every line of song sung along to, the sweat ran down your back once again.

The band played a great mix of all their songs—and you could definitely see from the fans’ faces who felt a little more for which “era” than for others. It was also really nice to hear songs from the brand-new album “Poltergeist” live, and I thought it was great that everyone knew the lyrics and was fully passionate about them. Personally, I’m not a fan of either the very old or the very new, but rather of the music “in between” — and so I definitely missed a few songs that I had expected to be included — but: I always think it’s good when setlists change and (further) develop, because it’s no fun for either the band or the audience when you always play exactly the same setlist.

I was particularly pleased with “Die Stadt gehört den Besten” (The City Belongs to the Best), “Maniac,” ‘Feuer’ (Fire), “Nie wieder Licht” (Never Again Light), and especially “The Void”—this was one of my personal highlights. The latter song triggered emotions in the audience that went beyond party mood and good vibes – you could see tears glistening in some eyes, and here and there a tear was shed as the song was experienced 100%. Music always manages to trigger all kinds of emotions and give the audience the chance to simply live them out in a kind of “safe space.” . And for many, MARATHONMANN shows in particular are exactly that space: you can come as you are and never feel like you don’t fit in.

And it was with this comforting feeling in thehearts, everyone went home – as always with good shows, they were released into the darkness of this Halloween night far too early.

If you haven’t seen the guys yet or don’t even have tickets for shows on this tour, you still have a few chances to change that!

Just go to https://marathonmann.band/, choose a show, and then buy your tickets in advance—because that’s the only way to give smaller bands the planning security they need!
