Jason Decay (Goat Horn, Cauldron): For the love of music
The legendary Canadian acts Goat Horn (disbanded in June 2006) and Cauldron have something in common – namely Jason Decay on vocals and bass guitar (in the middle on the start photo). After Goat Horn disbanded in 2006, Jason has continued his heavy metal vision Cauldron. Find out what else he is up to!
What bands were you in, Jason, prior to Goat Horn?
I had a band called Loudmouth that started in 1995, we changed our name to Forcefed around ’98 or so. I also had a band called Corpsebike at the time.
Any favorite metal bands?
Yes, lots! Most notably, like all time favourites would be Dokken, Metallica, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Rush, Def Leppard etc but the list goes far and wide.
When did you form GOAT HORN?
Sometime in 1999, I don’t remember an exact date, but I had already been jamming with Brandon and J * for a while at that point.
What was it like being in the band?
A lot of hard work for very little return but you do it for your love of music. It was quite exciting at times and sometime quite stressful. It’s a relationship like any other, it’s had it ups and down, mainly ups… we’re like brothers.
Why did GOAT HORN break up?
We just couldn’t make it happen anymore on a personal level. Things were happening for us but we just couldn’t keep it together any longer, it wasn’t planned that way. We were actually at our peak when we imploded but I guess we had already run our coarse.
Next you formed Cauldron. What was it like recording the first album?
It took too long! We could never really get any momentum going with a drummer because they were all in other bands. Into the Cauldron took way too long cinsidering most of those songs we taken from Goat Horn and then it was basically just me and Ian jamming as a two piece when we put Chained to the Nite together. We rushed that recording and then spent way too much time mixing it haha, we sort of got the ball rolling when we did Burning Fortune but I don’t think we really figured it out until Tomorrows Lost.
What inspires you to write lyrics?
Everyday life stuff, trail and error, observation, stuff I’m going through etc. Nothing too fancy. In fact, I’m usually not too inspired to write lyrics haha, its more like the homework part of songwriting…
Are you interested in occult subjects?
Maybe metaphorically but not really. I’m more into real life stuff.
What are you doing now, Jason?
Not much musically. I listed to music all the time but haven’t had much time these last few years to sit down and pick up a guitar. We do have around 5 song ideas for Cauldron but it has taken a while to get this far so I’m not sure when that will finally come together. Nowadays I’m working for a mechanical company that specializes water and wastewater treatment plants, shit basically haha, fun stuff!
