Jess and the Ancient Ones / Kremlin
Oct 7, 2016, Bar Loose, Helsinki
Although black is always an option, you could have worn any color – or any combination of colors and designs – to the 17th Svart Night, as both of this record label’s bands took us on a time travel on this evening.
Kremlin offered a Blues-rooted Retro Rock sound; I have troubles to point out a particular band for a comparison, but this Helsinki (self-defined ”spaceous zzrock”) quartet took a bow to The Doors as well as The Boss Springsteen, an earthen Rock attitude spiced up with a bit of Psychedelic – definitely captivating the audience (including myself), and by the way, the band has definitely nothing to do with Russia. Their debut album will soon be released (Oct 14), until then you can check them out here.

I had not seen Kuopio-based Jess and the Ancient Ones live on stage for a while and was therefore looking forward to this show, which is opening their upcoming European tour (Oct 28 – Nov 5, details see below). And what can I say, whoever was already captivated by the opening act, was hypnotised even further by JATAO. Or how else would you get a bunch of Finnish middle-aged Rock dudes dancing? The guys and their versatile intense front lady channeling the Psychedelic Hippie Rock from the 60s, 70s but adding their own particular twist – and it works, even on a small stage without any particular stage effects. Well done, so if you get a chance to see JATAO live, don’t miss it!
