Wardruna´s John Stenersen starts solo project – first single and tour coming soon!

After years of working behind the scenes, Norwegian musician John Stenersen is ready to unveil his long-awaited solo project and therefore joins ByNorse. Developed over the course of 15 years, the project introduces a distinctive musical identity that blends Nordic tradition with a contemporary edge. Stenersen is widely recognized for his work with Wardruna, Gåte, and Bergtatt.

At the heart of the music is the nyckelharpa, the traditional Scandinavian bowed string instrument that shapes the project’s unique sound. Drawing inspiration from ancient melodies and Nordic musical heritage, Stenersen reimagines these influences through energetic, dark, and rhythm-driven arrangements designed for modern audiences.

Speaking about the collaboration with ByNorse, Stenersen explains:
“By Norse was the obvious choice for me. After ten years of working alongside them with Wardruna, they feel like family. They aren’t just passionate about the music; they genuinely care about the artist. I have been developing this solo project on and off for the past 15 years, and with Wardruna now taking a tour break, the timing lined up perfectly. It’s incredibly rewarding to join a team that completely understands my creative vision and wants to help me grow as a solo artist without trying to change who I am. I’m really proud to be partnering with them.”

The project will make its official debut at the Midgardsblot festival on August 13, where Stenersen will perform the release show for his first single. The performance marks the beginning of an extensive release campaign, with more music scheduled to follow over the coming year.
