Matrix Resurrections

Original title: The Matrix Resurrections
December 2021, K-16, 2h 28m

In this case I can – and must – keep it short because it is completely impossible to deliver a more detailed review without spoilers. Which would be a shame, because: The less you know about the plot beforehand, the better…. One thing I can reveal safely: There is a post-credit scene, so don’t leave too soon!

Director / writer Lana Wachowski has definitely managed to follow up on the famous Matrix trilogy and wrap up some themes from these movies in a pretty coherent way. Matrix fans get a reunion with old acquaintances and in addition get to know exciting new characters. There’s lots of action as well as social criticism and philosophical reflections – in other words, everybody should walk out afterwards feeling satisfied. (Well, only in between it got a bit too cosy-philosophical for me for about 15min, so I dozed a bit – and did I actually hear snoring from the seat nearby?) This movie is not just a rehash, although references and parallels are celebrated with gusto. There is also no shortage of fun, meta-humor, self-irony, counterbalanced with action. No complaints about the cast either, especially (but not only) Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who obviously had a lot of fun with their Part 4 reprises. In my opinion there’s a good balance between “CGI” vs. “real” (shot in Babelsberg Studios, by the way!) and I haven’t noticed any embarrassing effects …

Therefore, a movie not to be missed!
