Steel Prophet – The God Machine

Label: ROAR! Records  Playing Time: 41 Min  Release: 26th April 2019

Steel Prophet belong to the veterans of US Metal and have been around for decades. For more than 35 years they have been releasing albums on a regular basis. But in the past years it has become quite silent around the band. The last release of Steve Kachinsky and his sidekicks was in 2014.

“The God Machine” begins with a thunder strike! When listening to the first seconds of the title track it becomes obvious that there is no longer Rick Mythiasin at the microphone. Instead they have the German-Greek R.D. Liapakis, known as singer of Mystic Prophecy and a couple of more bands. The rough voice of Lia is quite distinctive, therefore “The God Machine” sounds a bit like his main band. This impression is supported by the riffs and the pace of the first three songs. After those, the band reduces the speed a bit, making the songs more Rock-oriented and less metallic. But, with some exceptions (e.g. ‘Buried And Broken’), the songs in the second half of the album also become less catchy and a bit weaker in comparison.

All in all, “The God Machine” is a good sign of life of a legendary US underground band. I am curious whether the band will keep on working with Lia and if they will also enter the live stages together.
