Iggy Pop – Post Pop Depression

There is little point in an opening paragraph describing the artist, everyone has heard of Iggy Pop, even if they are not aware of anything other than the obvious Passenger and Lust For Life. However, this album (his 25th including Stooges material) is different from recent efforts in the fact Pop has co-written the release with Josh Homme from Queens of The Stone Age (while also featuring Dean Fertita from QoTSA and Matt Helders, the Arctic Monkeys drummer).

From the opening vocal line you can tell this is going to be something special. Reminiscent of Bowie and his epic finale, Blackstar, it’s possible the rumours are true and this is to be an amazing musical departure from the punk-rock legend.
This album is full of riffs which sound like you’ve been listening to them for years already, it has acoustic moments dusted with Bad Seeds-esque tubular bells, and it has unbelievably good production (again by Josh Homme). It makes you feel bleak, humble, happy, sad and everything in between. In short this will be one of the best albums you will hear this year.

Standout track – German Days. Led Zeppelin sound-alike opening riff, winding guitar driven tune with bassy vocals, QoTSA sounding backing vocals and an all-round nod to every band members’ influences.
