Iron Savior – Skycrest

Label: AFM Records  Playing Time: 57 Min  Release: 4th December 2020

If there was a price for the most consistent band which still has never achieved a real breakthrough, Iron Savior would be definitely a candidate. The band has been active for almost 25 years, had notable support in the beginning (Thomen Stauch, ex-Blind Guardian and Kay Hansen, Gamma Ray and ex-Helloween) and has released  ten studio albums already. But why have they never achieved the big breakthrough? Maybe one reason is their lack of touring. Significantly, their only live album was recorded in their hometown Hamburg…

In the beginning, “Skycrest” is not a big surprise: Down to earth melodic Heavy Metal, just as a Iron Savior are known for. Fast drumming, catchy choruses, well played solos and Piet Sielck’s distinctive vocals. Those are all trademarks which their fans love. The first couple of songs are all well-done with good choruses. But the level of the band’s classics is only reached with ‘Souleater’. I also have to admit that there are two songs, ‘Welcome To The New World’ and ‘There Can Be Only One’ that are a bit weaker. The second half of the album is much more surprising: it starts with ‘Raise The Flag’ and ‘End Of The Rainbow’, which are less Heavy Metal and more melodic Hard Rock. They are followed by ‘Ease Your Pain’, a classic Rock ballad. An absolute rarity for this band.

All in all, “Skycrest” has turned out a good album. It keeps the level of its predecessors, but cannot quite live up to the band’s classic “The Landing”.
