Arcadian Child – Fresh Act January 2018

Greetings from Limassol, friends! We are Arcadian Child and we play our own version of psychedelic rock.

The band is fronted by Panagiotis I.G on vocals and rhythm guitars and consists of Andreas Kerveros on bass, Stathis Chatzicharalambous on lead guitars and Chris Dimou on drums and percussion.

How did you meet each other, and when and why did you form this band?
We live in a small city in the Mediterranean island of Cyprus so we got to know each other through the various venues that hosted underground gigs and music. Our journey began in 2013 under the moniker of Atoutaleme. We reincarnated into Arcadian Child in the summer of 2016 and we released our debut album called “Afterglow” on the 29th of October.

The reason we formed this band was because we desperately wanted a healthy way to fight the burden of reality and routine.

How would you describe your musical style, and how did this style develop?
With today’s hyped terminology getting more complex we decide not to slap a label on our music. We like to believe that we play our own version of psychedelic rock with some pop sensitivities.

Our style developed primarily from the music each member of the band’s is listening. Take that and mix it with our eagerness in attempting to create original music and you get the Arcadian Child vibe.

What are your musical roots and influences?
Each member of the band will most likely have a different take on this question. In all honesty though, I deeply believe that 60s psychedelia and 90s alternative rock explosion have severely tainted our brains.

Was it a particular incident or song that inspired you to become musicians?
The addiction of creation. I believe that the strongest element that keeps us going is that music helps us get through our routine and allows to enter an alternate reality where really, anything is possible. Some members of the band maintain other side projects in order to be able to fund their day-to-day lives.

How do you write your music and lyrics, is it teamwork?
Our frontman usually works on a chord progression and if that ticks, then we built on it. So yes it is really a teamwork, maybe not in the conventional old-fashioned way, but still whatever comes out remains a collective work.

Is there a particular philosophy behind your works, or where do you get your inspiration from? And is there a story behind the band name?
The philosophy is that everything has a story to tell. We draw inspiration from our social surroundings, our backgrounds or even a situation we witness. Our songs are more of a story telling rather than personal experiences.

In the ancient years, Arcadia was believed to be Utopia; hence Arcadian Child is effectively the utopian child which symbolizes the hope that one holds for the future. In addition, Arcadians were among the first Greek speakers to descend in Cyprus around 1200 BC and influenced the Cypriot dialect spoken today.

What is it like in your country to be a Rock / Metal band (playing the particular style you are playing)?
I think that all bands who move within the “underground” tend to struggle. Struggle to book a gig, play their music on the radio. Cyprus couldn’t be any different in this aspect, it’s probably worse really. But things are improving and we are hopeful that the wider audiences will soon embrace this wave of music.

What are your goals, dreams, what do you want to achieve with your music?
We wish to travel to as many places possible with our music. We don’t like to measure our success, rather we have a vision and a plan to be able to support ourselves through our music. We’d love to be able to record our music, feed our family and friends and do what we were born to do.

What are you doing ”in real life”, when you are not making music?
Ha. The term “real life” gets blurrier and blurrier as we progress through this mayhem of routine. But just to answer the question:

Panayiotis is a financial advisor, Andreas teaches music, Christos is a network operator engineer and Stathis is a Manager in a food and beverages company.

Are you looking for a record company or would you prefer to stay in the DoItYourself mode?
Although we enjoy doing everything by ourselves we pursue a record deal that would respect us as humans and musicians and allow us to create whatever lurks in our souls.

Do you have a weird /absurd story to tell, e.g. about mishaps at a gig/tour?
Nothing that can published. Except maybe that one time that we had to spend a good part of a night in a police station after one of our gigs.

What are your plans in the (near) future?
We are working on new material that will see the light somewhere in 2018. In the meantime, we have booked several gigs across Cyprus and Athens. We are also working on a potential European tour in the summer.
