Captain Marvel

PG-12   2h 4min   release: 6.3.2019

The perfect movie for the International Women’s Day! My step was much more energetic when I went home afterwards… THIS is what I call a role model for little girls! Self-confident, fearless, a person of integrity – even when it (literally) hurts – no prince needed for a rescue, she can rescue herself – and the whole world. And whoever mutters “childish” or “escapism” – well, I bet there are a lot of people right now in real life who ask themselves whether they are “on the right side of history” or not (a hint: those with MAGA hats are definitely on the wrong side) …

Admittedly, I had never heard of Captain Marvel before, or the actress playing this character, Brie Larsen, and simply decided to be surprised. Positively. Well, no real bummers in the movie Marvel universe so far anyway…

When you are into a stunning visual adventure, a trip into a parallel universe (sic!), then this movie is a must for you anyway. The story, despite all the flashbacks, is easy to follow  – nice job of directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck: Planet Earth is drawn into an intergalactic war and Carol Denvers becomes a key figure in this war between two alien races. It all takes place around 1990 which means that the soundtrack is at least as cool as for the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Apropos, this film connects Iron Man / Captain America / Avengers and the Guardians plot lines.

The first Marvel movie mainly written by women (Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Meg LeFauve, plus the directors) – and yes, I noticed that some dialogue lines must have been written by people who know such a situation all too well from real life… and finally FINALLY no romance stuff whatsoever. Great.

And there’s not just this one strong woman who kicks the hell out of bad guys – there’s the single mom (“Maria Rambeau” Lashana Lynch) who obviously gets along quite well without a guy; then Anette Bening, powerful as ever, and some more strong alien warrior females…

More familiar faces – Ben Mendelsohn (from Star Wars Rogue One), Jude Law (raising attention als young Dumbledore recently), then Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury – wonderfully unhinged and funny, almost a self-parody – and made younger digitally just like Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson. Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace do not get much screen time, unfortunately, and I bet you’ll be close to tears seeing the second-last Cameo of Stan Lee (RIP) …

Yet the real super star of this movie is named Goose, stealing the show in several scenes … and as always with Marvel, I recommend to stay until the very end …

Which means: Go and watch this movie!
