Vikram – Behind The Mask

Always a good sign when the first notes of a track are electrifying. And yes, this band deserves my full attention. Vikram means wise, brave, strong, victorious in sanskrit language. “BEHIND THE MASK I” is a concept album, the first part of a trilogy, whose story is based on Nathaniel Frost’s life and his travels through several eastern countries in a journey of self-knowledge. Each song tells the story of what Nathaniel faced and discovered in each culture.

Hence their music blends modern and progressive metal influences, Power-Metal, Speed Metal, epic movie scores, rhythms, harmonies and all kind of ethnic musical elements from cultures like Persian, Egyptian, Gypsy, Arab, Hindu etc. The result is still very melodic, lead by the powerful, slightly rough voice of Guilherme de Siervi – every metal heart’s gonna melt.

When you hear Requem for Salem (and later e.g. Shokran) you’ll realize that the Guinness Book crowned world’s fastest guitarist Tiago Della Vega. In between there are calmer acoustic tracks, e.g. Andaluzia or Eyes of Ra feat. guest singer Inês Vera Ortiz; another guest at Hassan Tower is Jaiwa Kalai. The high level of music and storytelling continues until the very end and you are looking forward to the next part of the trilogy …

For fans of e.g. Nightwish, Sabaton, Rhapsody, Iron Maiden, Hollenthon, Blind Guardian, Savatage, Metal Church, Evergrey, Ne Obliviscaris, Mekong Delta… well, I give up, just check it out yourselves! Growls are rare, however this video below gives a good impression of what to expect of the album. Highly recommended!
