So-called super groups are always a difficult thing. Does the ability of each member sum up to a superb quality? In some cases yes, but in many other cases it turns out that just the name dropping is the selling point.
When we are talking about super groups in the Hard Rock / Heavy Metal genre, though, there is no way to skip A New Revenge in the future. The band members are Tim Owens (ex-Judas Priest, ex-Iced Earth and Yngwie Malmsteen), Bass player Rudi Sarzo (e.g. Dio, Whitesnake and Ozzy Osbourne), guitarist Keri Kelli (e.g. Slash’s Snake Pit and Alice Cooper) and Drummer James Kottak (ex-Scorpions).
But as mentioned above, the real question here is: How good is the music? „Enemies And Lovers“ focuses on good mood Hard Rock which occasionally adds some Heavy Metal vibes. The songs are extremely catchy and – naturally given the of the musicians involved – an overall well-done performance. I can assure you that among those 11 songs there is not a single bad one. Yet I do miss one or two real hit songs besides ‚Fallen‘.
And I do miss a bit more courage. All of the songs follow a similar straight-forward structure and remain in the radio-friendly 3-4 min range. A bit more variety would be appreciated, which is also concerning the mood. All the songs are pretty intense, one or two slow or acoustic tracks could have added to the dynamic of the album.
I will definitely be following A New Revenge who are touring in the US pretty soon, which is another difference to other super groups. Perhaps there will be another album that shows more variety.
