Flat Earth – None For One

Drakkar Entertainment (EU), Suur Etikett (FIN), release: 9.11.2018

In our interview we’ve already attempted to describe what this new all star band feat. Mikko “Linde” Lindström (git) and Mika “Gas Lipstick” Karppinen (dr, both Ex-HIM), Niclas Etelävuori (Ex-Amorphis, bass) and Anttoni “Anthony” Pikkarainen (Polanski, voc) offers on the debut album. Flat Earth can be seen as a new beginning and isn’t intended to be carried by just the previous achievements of single members. Flat Earth do not want to sail in the slipstream of the past – instead they want to step into the light.

Still you can recognize remnants of the past (bands), beginning with the fantastic opener “Subhuman” – massive, rocking, grooving ear candy – with a touch of Amorphis… I sense a bit of HIM when listening to “Blame” and “Limelight”, and Polanski might have influenced such psychedelic-alternative Metal induced as “Noble Swine” and “Freedom” – although I had to think of Soundgarden first. Muse might pop up in your head when listening to “Given Time” – and then it’s full Prog-experimental with some Jazz for “The Glow”. A bit too much experiment for my taste, though.

Yet the majority of the songs is pure ear candy, e.g. the beautiful guitar tune introducing “Cyanide” and its chorus, or the nice rocking finale “Kill My God”. The title track is another potential hit with a rhythm exactly right for headbanging.

Indeed a Rock-Alternative album offering a lot of variety and great songs! Yet I do have the feeling that Flat Earth have not 100% ditched the past and found their own line – but you can clearly hear what is about to come from this act in the future!
