Cyanna Mercury – Fresh Act January 2017
Those Greeks impressed us with their self-released debut album – so let’s find out more about them:
Who are you – could you please introduce yourselves?
We are Cyanna Mercury from Athens, Greece: Spyreas Sid, Nick Sid, Diamond Pr, Dennis P and Zilla.
How did you meet each other, and when and why did you form this band?
Two of us are brothers (the Sids), and Diamond was originally a friend and the bartender that listened to Spyreas’ mumbling during the summer of 2013. Dennis and Zilla were musicians in the Athens scene that we asked to come help us do this, but quickly became essential members of the band.
How would you describe your musical style, and how did this style develop? What are your musical roots and influences?
We founded this band on the principle target of creating a unique sound that would combine the traditional rhythms, harmonies and ideas of our birthplace, with the Western rock and folk music that brought us up. Our references vary from the obvious psychedelic bands like Aphrodite’s Child, Doors and Pink Floyd to the dark goth and folk legacies of Wovenhand, The Cult, Danzig, and the rock pioneers like the Beatles, the Stones, Alice Cooper etc
Is there a particular philosophy behind your works, or where do you get your inspiration from?
Our inspiration comes from the history, mythology and philosophy of our birthplace and the Mediterranean. We sing about what we live, who we are, what we think and feel we’ve seen before.
What is it like in your country to be a Rock / Metal band (playing the particular style you are playing)?
It takes all the love you can put into it, it is a way of life as anywhere in the world to be a musician, you must be strong and committed.
What are your goals, dreams, what do you want to achieve with your music?
Being able to make and perform music is its own reward, but changing the world is an undeniable dream. Vain but it is.
Are you looking for a record company or would you prefer to stay in the DoItYourself mode?
We welcome all help in what we do by anyone who is willing to do it with heart and soul and respect. But we can keep doing it without that.
What are your live shows like? What´s the perfect venue/show for you?
We try to convey all we have in our hearts and spirits when on stage. A good venue is the one with a warm and open crowd.
Do you have a weird /absurd story to tell, e.g. about mishaps at a gig/tour?
Lots. When on tour, things just happen out of nowhere all the time. But we will write a book someday about all that.
If you could freely choose a band to tour with, who would it be, and why?
Wovenhand probably.. We share the same view on the importance of enlightenment and spiritual connection.
What are your plans in the (near) future?
More touring of the “Archetypes” album, and a second album right after that.
