Cyanna Mercury – Archetypes

Self-release      21.11.2016

They call it “Psychedelic Folk” – the Greek act Cyanna Mercury present a pretty ambitious debut album – and with ambitious I mean that they did everything to put their creation into a proper frame. Dimitris Lilis produced the sound, the mix was done by Alex Bolpasis (The Noise Figures, Whereswilder etc.) and the mastering by James Plotkin (Electric Wizard, Moon Duo, Merzbow, John Carpenter, St. Vitus etc.). The album also features guest appearances by Kafka (voice in “Horse Dark As Night”, “Hermes” and “Ode To The Absent Father”), Esterina (backing vocals in “Horse Dark As Night”, “The Lunatic”, “Lilith” and “There Will Be A Time”), Stella Valasi (santouri in “Nothing We Can Do”), Kostas Karagiannakis (bouzouki in “The Lunatic”) and Phil Diamond (backing vocals in “Lilith”)

For me it is like time-travel to the “Swinging 60s” – not just Psychedelic Woodstock Mamas Papas Miniskirts and Hippies or Austin Powers-“groovy”, but also as a reference to the birth of Hardrock. Plus those Greek Folk elements, and these clean vocals with the occasional touch of Johnny Cash, or even Glenn Danzig in those darker moments (“Nothing We Can Do”). Apropos singer – Spyreas Sid has an appealing, remarkable voice, and you should check out this band just for his intense performance alone.
