Spiritus Mortis – The Year Is One

Label: Svart Records     release: Nov 11, 2016

It’s been seven years since the last Spiritus Mortis release named The God Behind The God, also the first with Albert Witchfinder (Ex-Reverend Bizarre) as singer. This fourth album of the Finnish doom band has an impressive introduction – Robe Of Ectoplasm features a catchy riff with hypnotic quality – and Black Sabbath fans might be moved to tears… When listening more closely, you might discover more quotations in honor of this legendary band on this album…
Despite the obvious influence, there’s no copying Black Sabbath – Spiritus Mortis do their own thing, quite skilled, diverse and sophisticated, in a wicked way. The deliver Doom (I am a Name on Your Funeral Wreath) as well as epic tunes (Babalon Working) or mega-heavy, sinister songs (Holiday in the Cemetary).
Albert Witchfinder’s talent crowns it all – he mainly uses clean vocals for a captivating, intense delivery, and when there’s an incredibly beautiful vocal tune like World Of No Light, when he sings softly, lovingly, expressing every line in a pleasurable way – maybe it’s better you don’t really listen to WHAT he is singing about, in order to avoid nightmares…

In other words, a great album, especially for people with a dark sense of humour.
