Dirkschneider: Live – Back to the Roots

Label: AFM Records   Playing Time: 130 min  Release: 28th October 2016

Under the label “Dirkschneider”, Udo Dirkschneider (of course), his son Sven and Fitty Wienhold, Andrey Smirnov and Kasperi Heikkinen (all from U.D.O.) have joined forces. But they do not play the usual U.D.O. songs, as one might expect. Instead, it is a journey back into Udo’s past, namely Accept. The Dirkschneider roundtrip shall be the final time for Udo playing songs from his Accept legacy. To me, it is a logical decision because U.D.O. have, meanwhile, published enough classics themselves and because Accept are active again (without Udo) and they are also playing the old stuff.

But let us talk about this release. It competes with both Accept releases (which contained a lot of bonus live materials) and also numerous U.D.O. live releases. The pros of this album are its huge setlist of 24 songs. It contains – of course! – all the classics but also some rare stuff, which Accept don’t even play live (e.g. .: ‚Up to the Limit‘, ‚Monsterman‘ and ‚TV War‘). In addition, it shines with an absolute superb sound that is much better than on the last two U.D.O. live releases.

All in all, it is a clear recommendation. If you want to enjoy Dirkschneider live, you still have the chance until the end of the year. So save the date!
