Oddland – Origin

Label: Sensory Records released: 09.09. 2016
Origin is the second record of th Finnish progressive metal band Oddland and the four guys from Turku present a top class record.

The subtlety is in the detail. A dense, filigree, mixed sound carpet leaves the musicians a lot of space to show their virtuosity. The songs are thought through with many surprises, long guitar runs alternate with solos, there are parts in which the drums dominate, the bass is not too shortcoming, but the big picture never gets out of sight.

Producer Daniel Bergstrand worked among others for Meshuggah, In Flames and Dimmu Borgir, and the clarity of production can not hide his signature. Oddland, however,  take a different direction musically, playful and experimental; influences of Mekong Delta, Les Claypool, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iron Maiden can be found.
Moreover, Sakari Ojanen’s clean vocals, accompanied by staccato-melodic to brachial guitars, let the listener float across the alternating fast and slow song passages and, well, start dreaming.

My favorite track is the diverse, virtuoso  “Thanatos”, with many breaks, in which the band shows everything they have to offer.

A further plus of the longplayer is the artwork by the Egyptian artist Mohammed Essam, who has created a distinctive picture for each of the nine tracks.

Friends of the elegant double-edged, self-twisted ax with laser pistol and sling should definitely give it a try, I am sure “Origin” will soon be part of my personal collection.
