Amorphis – Under The Red Cloud

Playing Time: 50 min  Label: Nuclear Blast  Release: 04th September 2015

10 years ago, Tomi Joutsen joined Amorphis as new lead vocalist. Now the Finnish guys are about to release their 5th album of this era. It is well-known that Amorphis 2015 are much more than the pure Death Metal they started with in 1992. Meanwhile they have also been using Rock, Folk and oriental music, melting it all into a coherent, mostly melancholic sound.

And, to say it directly, nothing has changed on “Under The Red Cloud”. Actually, the opposite is the case: Amorphis are showing all of their facets, sometimes even in a single song. What otherwise would result in confusion in most cases, works here very well, is well-done and perfectly arranged. Therefore “Under The Red Cloud” will not disappoint a single one of the fans of the more recent stuff. Especially because the title track, ‘Bad Blood’ and a song like ‘Tree of Ages’ have turned out really great. In return, there is only one really weak song to be found (‘Enemy At The Gates’). There are just 2 things I have to criticize: 1. Some of the choruses could have been more memorable. 2. The cover artwork.
