Be’lakor – Vessels

Label: Napalm Records  Playing Time: 56 Min   Release: 24th June 2016

Be’lakor from the sunny city of Melbourne (Australia) should be familiar to some Metalheads already. They have released 3 albums, their 4th one “Vessels” is been released right now. The 5 guys play melodic Death Metal, but they sound completely differently to the typical bands from this genre.

The mostly really long, complex and progressive songs do not only offer hard Metal riffs, but also quieter, almost acoustic tunes played by guitar or piano. This builds a great contrast and it also gives the songs an atmospheric dimension. All in all, it sounds quite unique. Maybe it can be compared to Enslaved or Borknagar in some ways.

Although uniqueness is very positive, I struggle with the songs themselves. Actually there are many great parts, but I do not remember a single one after multiple times. The promo information talks about “catchy tunes”, but I do not share this opinion. Until today, I did not recognize anything like a chorus in these complex songs. Although the music is very well done in terms of composition and handicraft, this aspect does not have much impact on the overall judgement, unfortunately.
